Chaiten volcanic activity: NOMADS’ KEEPS ON MOVING

Chaiten Volcano
“Business as usual”, is what is happening in Nomads of the Seas after Chaiten Volcano, located 10 kilometers northeast from the southern Chilean town of Chaiten started to show signs of volcanic activity last Friday May 2nd.

Nomads of the Seas expeditions operate between Puerto Montt and the Taitao Peninsula (San Rafael Lagoon), up to 600 nautical miles south of Puerto Montt. This operating theater has been divided in five zones. Chaiten and its volcano is located near the second area of operations (see map); however the affected location does not include any of Nomads’ wildlife expedition sites and fishing spots for this area. The most affected places in Chile are Futaleufu River, Espolon Lake, Las Rosas Lake, Yelcho Lake and Yelcho River; none of these locations are visited by our guests during our program. However, the most extensive ash cloud coverage damage has been registered in Argentina, in the Chubut and Rio Negro provinces.

Although Chaiten is within proximity of one of the five operating areas, this does not change our current operation since we have no register of ash damage up to date.

Backcountry skiing in Patagonia?! Nomads explores this exciting possibility.

Heliski
The dream of waking up onboard an expedition cruise ship on the Patagonian coast and minutes later enjoying the high-adrenaline excitement of skiing down pristine snow-covered mountain slopes is a lot closer to becoming a reality than you think, thanks to an exploratory effort currently underway by Andrés Ergas, President of Nomads of the Seas.

Andrés is a ski fanatic and aboard Nomads’ Atmosphere, he has always gazed up at Patagonia’s snow-capped peaks with a mixture of curiosity and longing. This year, to determine the feasibility of incorporating heliskiing into the Nomads’ array of adventure alternatives, he invited renowned expert skiers from France and Russia to explore various mountains to find a singular, safe and enticing circuit for his guests.

New Services in the Atmosphere Spa

Thalassotherapy Thalassotherapy is one of the many attractions offered by Nomads of the Sea. This treatment uses the richness of the ocean, with its regenerative properties and elements, to provide a rejuvenating and relaxing rest for passengers who choose to enjoy this activity.

The water used is extracted directly from the ocean and heated in four baths available on the fifth deck of the ship.

Marine water is a powerful esthetic and therapeutic resource thanks to its salinity and density. In the fifth century before Christ, the Greek Hippocrates – known as the father of modern medicine – stated that “the sea cures the illnesses of men.”

Whale Watching 2.0 with Nomads

At Nomads of the Seas nothing is standard or similar to other operations. This is true for the whale watching activities carried out aboard the specialized watercraft, RIB Zodiac Hurricane, which this year has great novelties for our Patagonian adventurers. Thanks to the use of a submarine camera, now these magnificent cetaceans can be studied through image and sound.

Whale The team of scientists has installed this image capturing device with which the ocean now acquires another dimension; all life harbored in these waters can be appreciated in detail using the 3D lens available on the RIB. Dolphins, sea lions, whales and small fish can be observed in their natural habitat, displaying the beauty of their movements. The images also contribute scientific data like the existence of young species and the re-identification through marks on their whole bodies.

This is a portable camera so it can also be used aboard the Atmosphere. This way, everything that goes on in the ocean can be seen on a wide screen on the deck, increasing the ways in which to connect with the sea.

Patagonia’s rainforests are now considered Biosphere reserves

UNESCO has just recognized Patagonia’s rainforest as a valuable ecosystem for humanity and has named the area a biosphere reserve. It is in these marvelous places located in the X and XI Regions of Chile that Nomads of the Seas has developed its expedition cruise, where guests can travel deep into Patagonian territory.
Patagonia rainforests
Biosphere reserves provide conservation opportunities adapted to each environment, combining scientific knowledge with government regulations in an attempt to reduce biodiversity loss, improve the survival means of the population and raise social, economic, and cultural conditions, necessary for a sustained environment. Biosphere reserves can also be useful sites for learning and experimentation purposes.
