This region has one of the world's most marvelous forests, which emerged due to the temperate weather caused by the ocean's proximity and the rare geological evolution of the Chilean territory.
This evergreen and lush forest is characterized as southern temperate in the coastal sector and in those intermediate valleys under 200 meters/660 feet above sea level. This has a large variety and diversity of endemic species – typical of the country and zone – many of which can be seen as breathtaking wooded forms. This is the case of the Coihue, Laurel, Mañío, Tepa and Tepú, to name the most abundant trees in this entire region.
The northern area of our operation accounts for the southernmost distribution of the millenary Alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides), an endemic tree of Chile and of certain isolated areas in the south of Argentina. Many individuals of this endangered species, which is over four thousand years old, stand guarding the canopy of this foliaged and unique forest.
Three new and symbolic trees, i.e., the Cypress' of the Guaitecas and the Chiloé and Magallanes Coihues, grow with vitality at sea level in the southernmost zone where thousands of islets and islands draw the Chonos and Guaitecas archipelagoes.
A large variety of shrub-like, creeper, epiphytic, geophytic, herbaceous species and ferns, many of which possess endemic characteristics, complement the magnificent botanic setting of the territory in which we operate. Three icons keep reappearing throughout the entire trip, i.e., Magellanic Fuchsia (Fuchsia magellanica), Barberry (Berberis sp.) and the primitive Chilean Rhubarb (Gunnera chilensis), with enormous leaves that can afford unforeseen and impermeable protection from possible lashing rain.
