Throughout the wide Chilean territory, Patagonia outstands for the unique beauty of its landscapes and biodiversity of its lands and oceans.
This region has one of the world's most marvellous forests, which emerged due to the temperate weather caused by the ocean's proximity and the rare geological evolution of the Chilean territory. Both, explain why this site’s forests are only comparable to those found in New Zealand, Tasmania, Australia or South Africa.
The great amount of rain that falls through the year, which sometimes reaches 3.500 mm, allows the development of an exuberant flora. Among the amazing vegetation of the region, the exceptional trees' variety give life to the Magellan Forest. Some of the most common Patagonia's trees are the Alerce, Lenga, Coigüe, Ñirrea, Canelo and the Guaitecas Cypress. Also bushes like Calafate, Ciruelillo and Leñadura. Coigüe and Lenga provide excellent wood to make furniture.
This incomparable eco-region offers a unique native fauna of mammals, insects, amphibious and birds. Among the insects one may find the Ciervo Volante and Coleóptero del Coigüe.
Bird-life is abundant: The Carancho or Carrion-Hawk is one of the characteristic birds of the Patagonian landscape; the presence of long-tailed green parakeets attracted the attention of the earlier navigators; and hummingbirds may be seen flying amidst the falling snow. The Condor flies through the Andes Mountain's peaks and gets to be 4 mts. long from one wing tip to the other (when opened). Also one may find the Ñandú, Garza Cuca, Caranca, Jilgero, Loica, Martín Pescador Rey, swan, flamingo, upland geese, and the streamer duck; the Great Magellan Woodpecker, Chucao, Gallareta, Huet-Huet, Búho del Monte, Aguilucho and Catita Austral.
Among the typical mammals of the Patagonian plains are the Monito del Monte, Guinga, Coipo, Pudú, wild cats, weasels and cougars. Also, the Guanaco, zorros, zorrinos and the Tuco-Tuco.
This region is also formed by fjords and channels which penetrate into the Cordillera. There are also a wide variety of penguins, which most of the year live in the ocean and, between October and March, get to land to mate. There are also several fish species, dolphins, cetaceans, seals and sea lions.
